Narrative:
While approaching Iliamna in high winds, the right outer wing, the empennage, and portions of the left wing separated from the aircraft, causing it to enter a spin from which recovery was not possible.
PROBABLE CAUSE: An in-flight structural failure caused by an encounter with severe-to-extreme turbulence. This turbulence was not forecast and its presence was not known by the flight crew. The failure occurred in the area of the right wing (WS197) which had been weakened to an indeterminate degree to pre-existing fatigue cracks. (NTSB-AAR-70-16)
