The student pilot flew faster than the computed approach and landing speeds and then maintained higher than idle thrust during the first few seconds after touchdown. As a result, the speed brakes and spoilers did not deploy. The runway was wet and the aircraft hydroplaned after the instructor pilot selected the emergency brakes. The aircraft departed the runway and came to a stop 190 feet off the end of the runway.
The airplane was withdrawn from use following the accident and moved to the USAF Aeronautical Systems Center (ASC) at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio in March 2005 for groundtests.
