The Air Europa Boeing 737 sustained damage when it impacted approach lights before landing at Katowice, Poland.
The aircraft operated on a flight from Beirut, Lebanon. The first officer was pilot flying. Weather at destination Katowice was below minima as the flight began its descent to the airport. The flight was cleared for a LOC/ILS approach to runway 27. The glide path was intercepted 5.4 miles before the runway threshold, and 3 dots above the glide slope.
This forced the crew to execute a high speed descent at about 1600 to 1800 ft/min, which was more than twice the limit required for a stabilized ILS approach. The whole approach was performed with the autopilot engaged. The aircraft crossed the glide path at decision height. Due to the high speed of the descent the autopilot did not intercept the ILS signal, and the aircraft continued its descent. At this point the EGPWS alarm sounded, and a moment later the captain took over control. The plane then impacted the second row of lights of the approach light system, destroying the remaining lights at a distance of about 850 meters before the runway threshold. The aircraft landed safely, but sustained damage to the no. 1 engine and flap fairings.
