Republic F-84B-36-RE Thunderjet 48-657, 82nd FS, 78th FG, USAF: Presumed written off (destroyed) May 26 1950 when went missing on a sortie from Hamilton AFB, Navato, California. Aircraft last seen over Nicasio, Marin County, south west of Hamilton AFB, Novatio, California. Pilot of 48-657 on this occasion was Paul A Witt, USAF was was recorded as "killed in a missing aircraft".

On 1 March 1949, the 78th Fighter Group received the first of the new production F-84 Thunderjets, with these aircraft going to the 82nd, 83rd and 84th Fighter Squadrons. The F-84s became problematic with cracks appearing in wing spars or skin beginning in September 1949. The group lost four jets in accidents by the end of the year. It is possible that was the cause of the loss of 48-657.

Nicasio (Spanish for "Nicasius") is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Marin County, California, United States. It is located 8 miles (13 km) west-southwest of Novato, at an elevation of 194 feet (59 m).
