Narrative:
Hawker Hurricane Mk.1 L1898 (VY-O) of 85 Squadron, RAF: Officially described as "Hurricane L1898 damaged by bullets during air operations over Lille/Seclin, France, 10 May 1940". On 10th May 1940 Sgt H.H. Allgood was flying Hurricane L1898 from Lille to Merville and was shot down soon after taking off; he sustained injuries when the aircraft crashed and overturned and the pilot was possibly hospitalised. Sgt Allgood only returned to 85 Squadron when they had returned to the UK. Probably shot down by Uffz. Hans-Joachim Hartwig of 5./JG 2

Crew:
Sgt (565462) Harold Henry ALLGOOD (pilot) RAF - wounded

The Hurricane was declared u/s (unserviceable) on 9 May 1940, and is believed to have been abandoned at Lille/Seclin when 85 Squadron RAF retreated from France on 21 June 1940 to Debden, Essex. It is possible that Hurricane L1898 was being ferried from Lille/Seclin to Merville for repairs at the time of this incident - that is, it was a ferry flight, not a combat flight, as L1898 was not "combat ready".
