Narrative:On April 26, 2012 the KA-32A helicopter, registration ER-KGD, operating a formation flight with a similar type helicopter, registered ER-KGE, took-off from Kishinev Airport (LUKK) at 13:00 UTC towards Tekirdağ Çorlu (LTBU) in Turkey.
The flight route included refueling at Constanța (LRCK), Romania.
Some 75 minutes after take-off, at 14.15 UTC / 17.15 LT, in the vicinity of the Ostrov village, Tulcea county, the helicopter ER-KGD, flying as second in formation, tried to contact by radio the helicopter ER-KGE, the leader of the
formation, because it initiated an emergency landing. The leader of the formation, who was just communicating with Tulcea TWR, received only a small part of the message. Concluding the conversation with the controller in Tulcea, the captain of the helicopter operating as leader of the formation, repeatedly tried to contact the crew of the helicopter ER-KGD, getting no answer. Since communication with the other helicopter in the formation was not established, the leader helicopter initiated a 180⁰ turn to return on the route and determine visually the situation of the other helicopter. Initially there was identified just a smoke column, indicating a possible fire, while approaching it was obviously that the second aircraft in the formation was burning on ground.
The probable cause of the accident
The probable cause is the impossibility for crew to control the aircraft during emergency landing because of in-flight damage of the main gearbox essential elements.
