Narrative:
American Aviation AA-1 Yankee G-AYHB: First registered in the UK (C of R R.11680/1) on 21/7/1970 to General Aviation Sales Ltd., Jersey, Channel Islands. Operated by Air Navigation and Trading Co Ltd Flying Club at Squire's Gate, Blackpool, Lancashire, but lasted less than six months on the UK civil register

Written off (destroyed) 1/1/1971 when failed to pull out of a spin, and dived into the ground at Preesall, near Blackpool, Lancashire. According to the following extract from the official AAIB report into the accident:

"The accident occurred during a local instructional flight from Blackpool airport. About twenty minutes after take-off the aircraft was seen flying some ten miles north of Blackpool at about 3,000 feet; its engine was running normally.

Shortly after turning on to a southerly heading the aircraft went into a right hand spin. After some six turns of the spin there was an apparent attempt to recover but it was unsuccessful and the aircraft began to spin again in the same direction. Three or more turns were observed before the aircraft went out of sight. It was found to have struck the ground in a nose-down attitude, in a manner consistent with having been spinning to the right. Both the occupants were killed and the aircraft was destroyed but there was no fire".

The official AAIB report names the two fatalities as Roderick John Turner (Flying Instructor. aged 24) and John Hampson Smith (Student Pilot Under Training, aged 19).

Registration G-AYHB cancelled by the CAA on 1/1/1971 as "destroyed"
