Narrative:The Bell 206-L3 helicopter performed a non-scheduled passenger flight from the helipad at Hotel Wayira, in the Municipality of Manaure, Guajira.
The flight's intention was for tourism purposes, consisting of a flyover of the hotel surroundings, lasting approximately 6 minutes.
According to preliminary information, the pilot in command carried out the pre-flight preparations without any issues, and the helicopter had a total of 260 lb of fuel on board.
Subsequently, the helicopter was boarded by six passengers, without cargo, and the pilot conducted a safety briefing for the passengers.
At 12:17 local time, the pilot took off from the helipad and climbed to 500 feet, heading along the coastline towards La Herradura lagoon and its surroundings.
During the flight, some passengers requested that the pilot maneuver the helicopter to experience a "vertigo sensation" during the flight. In response, the pilot stated that he maintained straight and level flight and subsequently performed a climb, reducing collective, and when the speed was lost, he made a right turn to regain speed and maintain the flight. The pilot reported that this maneuver resulted in a loss of 200 feet of altitude.
After this maneuver, another similar one was performed without any issues. Then, the pilot prepared for the approach to the helipad and reported that, at this point, a downdraft condition occurred, causing a loss of altitude and the collision of the helicopter with the terrain.
As a result of the impact, the helicopter dynamically overturned to the right, with severe damage to its structure, including detachment of the main rotor mast and blades. There was also partial damage to the tail boom.
During the event, minor injuries were sustained by the occupants, who were assisted in the evacuation by local residents in the area.
