The Geotech Aviation Limited AS 350B3 (AStar) helicopter was conducting electromagnetic survey operations from a camp at Kitsault, British Columbia (BC), with only the pilot on board. An FM radio call from the pilot was received by the company’s geophysical equipment operator. Shortly after, a 406 MHz emergency locator transmitter (ELT) signal was detected by the Medium Earth Orbit Search and Rescue (MEOSAR) system and relayed to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Victoria, BC. The site was accessed by Search and Rescue Technicians and they reported that the pilot had been fatally injured. The helicopter was destroyed and there was no post-impact fire.
