Flew into mountainous terrain in dark night and snowfall. Aircraft 2 miles off route. Returning to base after dropping off patient.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows: THE PILOT'S INADEQUATE PREFLIGHT PLANNING TO ASSURE THAT THE INTENDED COURSE AND ALTITUDE PROVIDED ADEQUATE TERRAIN CLEARANCE.
