Narrative:
Crashed into the North Sea 45 miles NE of Scarborough, North Yorkshire** after the rear of the aircraft caught fire. The crew ejected at 1,300 feet amsl and were rescued.

A labyrinth seal around the high pressure shaft failed. This caused the shaft to fail and the turbine to over-speed and also fail. An explosion occurred which penetrated the engine casing and severed several hydraulic lines. This started a fire which quickly engulfed the rear of the aircraft.

As a result of this accident, the entire Royal Air Force fleet of Tornado F.3 ADV aircraft underwent modifications to the engine and fuel systems (see link #5).

**NOTE: Several published sources give the crash location as "60 miles East of Newcastle-upon-Tyne". However, the official MoD Board of Inquiry gives the crash location as "45 miles North East of Scarborough". The aircraft was assigned to 111 Squadron, RAF Leuchars, but was "on loan" to a crew from 11 Squadron, RAF Leeming at the time of the accident
