Narrative:The P-47D failed to take off and crashed into a bungalow in Foxwood Ave, Christchurch, bursting into flames.
One of the aircraft's bombs exploded almost immediately and a second bomb detonated some minutes later as the result of the fierce heat generated by the fire.
Firefighters and service personnel were helping women and children from the house as the second explosion occurred.
In all, 13 persons died in this wartime tragedy including the pilot of the P-47D, Vincent R. James and 14 were injured.
