Narrative:Crashed in a clearing 10 km North West of the northern tip of Lake Hauroko, near the Burn Hut, in Fiordland, New Zealand, close to a second R22 which was carrying out a deer recovery operation. Subject helicopter was observing, initally from 15 metres up, just prior to it coming down. Pilot aged 64 OK, passenger aged 55 needed medical treatment. Both persons on board came from Warkworth, north of Auckland. According to the official synopsis from the NZ CAA report into the accident:
"The day before the accident, the pilot had flown from Northland to Fiordland with one passenger. They planned to visit a friend and to enjoy some mountain flying in the local area. On the morning of the accident, they had been out flying for around an hour and a half with another helicopter. The other helicopter successfully landed in a large bush clearing to fill out venison paper work. As the pilot of the second helicopter was making very slow OGE orbits deciding where to land, tail rotor effectiveness was lost. The helicopter began to yaw to the right, and the situation rapidly developed to where it was irrecoverable with the altitude remaining. The helicopter continued to yaw before impacting the ground causing significant damage. The passenger received minor injuries in the accident. The first helicopter flew the occupants out to a nearby road."
