Narrative:According to available information, the pilot, accompanied by a passenger departed from a private aerodrome on the pilot’s property in the Camperdown district to Margate aerodrome (FAMG) early during the morning of 29 April 2012. On their arrival at FAMG they attended a meeting and several hours later they returned to the aircraft for their intended flight back to their point of departure. At approximately 0850Z, the pilot accompanied by his passenger commenced with the take-off run from runway 04 at FAMG. According to a person that was in the tower at the time, manning the radio, he heard the following broadcast over the radio by a pilot “MAYDAY engine dead”. He then requested the mayday aircraft to state his position and registration again, but there was no answer.
He then requested the information again, but without any response. He then observed smoke to the right of the threshold of runway 22 (looking from the tower towards the north). At the same time a helicopter that was airborne in the vicinity of the aerodrome also observed the smoke and the pilot flew over the accident site confirming an aircraft had crashed and it was on fire.
Aerodrome rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) personnel that was maintaining a listening watch on the aerodrome radio frequency responded swiftly to the accident site. The passenger perished in the accident and the pilot passed away four days later in hospital.
Probable Cause
Unsuccessful forced landing following an engine stoppage after take-off.
The cause of the engine stoppage could not be determined with certainty.
