Narrative:Crashed 23/1/1987 shortly after takeoff and caught fire: aircraft came down 750 metres south west of threshold of Runway 04 at Perth Aerodrome, Scotland (EGPT/PSL). The student pilot (from Botswana) flying solo was killed. According to the following extract from the official AAIB report into the accident:
"The aircraft taxied for Runway 22 at Perth/Scone at 14:17 hours, and took off shortly afterwards. It completed one circuit successfully, landed, and the took off again without coming to a halt on the runway. After a 'downwind' call, the pilot reported 'finals' on the R/T, and then added that the next landing was to be a 'touch and go'. The aircraft landed and was seen to take off again normally at about 14:38 hours. The aircraft climbed straight ahead to a height of between 200 and 300 feet
It was heard passing a house which is situated near to the south west boundary of the airfield, when, shortly afterwards, the occupants of the house heard a crash and observed fire and smoke in a ploughed field some 200 metres from the house.
The aircraft was not observed from the ATC tower, since, although the crash site was in view from the tower, the direction of the crash site was in direct sunlight, the sun being low in the sky and 7 degrees to the right of the runway heading. However a pall of smoke was observed by an engineer, who was near the main hangar, and he raised the alarm and alerted the crash rescue crew. The airfield crash rescue Land Rover was on site within a few minutes, followed by the Perth Fire Brigade vehicle at 14:50 hours. The student pilot had been fatally injured in the crash"
Damage to airframe: Per the AAIB report "aircraft destroyed". As a result, the registration G-BDAU was cancelled by the CAA over a year later on, 8/3/1988 as aircraft "destroyed"
