Narrative:
The helicopter was about to embark on a sight-seeing tour. The pilot discussed the load factor with another pilot, as there would be four adults on board and a full load of fuel. Two hover in ground effect tests were carried out and both were found to be in order. The pilot then committed to take-off. As soon as the helicopter was out of ground effect the rotor rpm dropped and the horn came on. The helicopter then descended to the point of impact 370m away. The accident report states that the helicopter’s in ground effect (IGE) hover capabilities were exceeded by approximately 67kg which rendered the aircraft too heavy to conduct a safe IGE hover takeoff under prevailing conditions. A female passenger died in the accident.
