Narrative:The aircraft was destroyed when it flew into a mountainside some 7.5 miles southwest of Big Bear Airport (at approximate co ordinates: 34'167" N, 116'94" W) whilst positioning for a landing at the airport. It impacted into the 6,740-foot amsl level Clarks Summit, in the San Bernandino National Forest, near Big Bear City, California. (The airfield's elevation is 6,750 feet).
The accident happened in daylight but in marginal VMC, with 10 miles visibility, 1,000 feet broken cloud base. The pilot contacted Big Bear inbound at 16:30 PST and requested the weather. This was duly passed and was acknowledged. This was the last contact with the aircraft which crashed at 16:35 PST. All seven persons on board (crew of two plus five passengers) were killed.
The flight originated at Brown Field, San Diego, California. The passengers, who were going to Big Bear for skiing, had chartered the aircraft after their own pilot had declined to operate the flight due to'weather/mechanical' problems.
The NTSB determined that the probable cause of the accident was the pilot's poor judgement in continuing visual flight into IMC in mountainous terrain obscured by clouds. Factors in the accident were: the pilot's failure to obtain a pre-flight weather briefing, the weather conditions and the high terrain.
Registration N60AW cancelled by the FAA on June 23, 1992. Note that some sources list "Andrew & Williamson Sales Company", who were the owners of the aircraft, and other list "James B. Enlowe" who seems to have been the pilot/charterer of the aircraft
