Narrative:
MOTORISTS OBSERVED THE HELICOPTER FLYING LOW OVER AND ALONG INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 4. IN THE VICINITY OF A HIGHWAY REST AREA, THE HELICOPTER MANEUVERED TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, THEN FLEW BACK OVER THE MEDIAN. TWO WITNESSES SAID IT CAME TO A HOVER, THEN STARTED TO CONTINUE ALONG THE ROADWAY. SUBSEQUENTLY, IT HIT A POWER LINE THAT CROSSED OVER THE HIGHWAY AND CRASHED ONTO THE MEDIAN AFTER TRAVELING ANOTHER 426 FEET. AFTER IMPACTING THE MEDIAN, THE HELICOPTER TRAVELED ANOTHER 57 FEET BEFORE COMING TO REST. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED IN THE VICINITY OF WHERE THE PILOT'S WIFE AND A FRIEND OF THE PASSENGER WERE TRAVELING BY AUTO. THE PILOT AND HIS WIFE DENIED KNOWING EACH OTHER WERE IN THE VICINITY; ALTHOUGH, BOTH WERE RETURNING FROM THE SAME RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE WAS ATTEMPTING A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING AT THE REST AREA DUE TO BAD WEATHER. AN INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT DURING THE ACCIDENT, THE ROTOR OF THE HELICOPTER HIT THE POWER LINE ABOUT 28 FEET AGL. A WITNESS SAID THAT LIGHT RAIN WAS FALLING WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED.
