Narrative:
Handley Page Hampden Mk.I AD911 (OL-M) of 83 Sqaudron, RAF. Lost on combat operations on night of 10-11/10/1941. Mission: Essen. Took off from RAF Scampton at 23:05 hours on 10/10/1941.
The aircraft was hit by the combined fire of Flak and night fighter pilot Feldwebel Siegfried Ney of the 4./NJG 1, who had taken off from Leeuwarden airfield; crashed in the Waddenzee off Harlingen, Friesland, Netherlands at 05:00 hours local time next morning (11/11/1941) at approximate co ordinates: 53°11′N 5°25′E. Of the crew of four, three survived, captured, and were taken as POW, and one was killed:

Pilot: Sgt. D.C. Hedley RAF - Survived, captured, taken as POW
Observer: Sgt. G. Mitchell RAF - Survived, captured, taken as POW
Wireless Op/Air gunner: Sgt. William Albert Brooks (925823) - KIA, body recovered for burial at Den Burg, Texel
Air gunner: Sgt. E.W.E. Gough RAF - Survived,captured, taken as POW

Sgt Brooks is buried in Den Burg General Cemetery on the island of Texel.
