Narrative:ZK-HIP (2nd) c/n 1804, was a 1991 production machine, initially registered in the USA as N4076J. It was registered in NZ on 03-11-1993 to Opotiki Helicpters and then pased through Ashworth Helicopters at Gisborne from January 1995; then to Skidmark Helicopters at Opotiki from September of 1999. In August of 2004 it went down to High Country Helicopters Ltd/Argyle Station near Waikaia., then to Rowberry Farm Ltd at Wanaka in May of 2008, and finally to Allan Munro of Hillpoint Station, near Winton from 03-09-2009
Written off (destroyed) 14-10-2010 when crashed 2 km South East of Colyers Island, Bluff Harbour, Southland, killing both persons on board. A search was initiated at 2:15 pm when a Robinson R22 carrying an instructor and another pilot was declared overdue. The last communication with the missing aircraft was at 1:30 pm. No distress message was heard and no ELT signal detected.
Jason Wright (29) instructor-pilot and Chief Executive of Stewart Island Helicopters were on a training flight with pupil helicopter pilot Allan Munro (67) when the helicopter went missing.
The submerged wreckage of the missing aircraft was located in Bluff Harbour at about noon on 15-10-2010. The body of the instructor was found on the beach of an islet nearby and the pupil pilot was found in the helicopter.
The engine was not producing power at the time of the impact and the rotors had no appreciable energy. NZCAA conclude that it is likely that the student pilot mishandled the entry into an autorotation allowing low NR to develop, with insufficient time for the instructor to intervene before the rotor RPM became irrecoverable.
