Narrative:
On 8 January 1942 the Beaufighter IIF T3037 of 406 Sqn RCAF was engaged on a GCI (Ground Controlled Interception) Exercise when the pilot lost control in cloud, with a subsequent spin into the ground at Stobbswood Colliery, Widdrington, Northumberland. Both crew, Plt Off Herbert Basil Wooler (pilot), of Halfway Tree, St. Andrew, Jamaica, and Sgt Trevor Williams (radar operator) of Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, were killed.

The book "Their Corner of a Foreign Field" by Peter Clark has a detailed account of this crash.

The Beaufighter was issued to 19 MU on 9 October 1941 before joining 406 Squadron on 28 December so it was a very new aircraft.

The loss card states:
"INSTRUMENTS"
Lost control in clouds. Spun into ground.
O/C: Loss control whilst flying by instruments
AOC: Not possible to determine whether the accident was caused by faulty instrument flying or an instrument failure owing to the extensive damage of the a/c
