Narrative:
Ex-RAF Hurricane L2106; lost in combat 2 March 1940. The death of Hurricane pilot lieutenant-pilot Xavier Henrard (born 5 May 1914 Woluwe-Saint-Pierre) was front page news in 1940. He died in the St Hubert-Bastogne sector on 2 March 1940 during the interception of a Dornier Do-17 which returned from a reconnaissance flight over France via neutral Belgian territory.

The Hurricane of Henrard (H-26) was one of the three sets of two the Squadron who were deployed against the Germans. When the Hurricanes tried to force the Dornier to land, the German plane opened fire. The three Belgian aircraft were hit. Henrard was fatally injured and crashed with his aircraft. The Hurricane from 1st Sergeant Edmond Lieutenant had to make an emergency landing at Achene and only the plane of Sergeant Eugene Lelièvre could land safely.

Between the hamlets of Hemroulle and Champs, northwest of the center of Bastogne, a memorial stone commemorates the place where the first Belgian pilot of the Second World War fell. He himself is buried in the municipal cemetery of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre.
