K9965 Spitfire Mk.Ia (c/no.177). First Flown 5-5-39. Delivered to 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron at Abbotsinch, Glasgow 10-5-39.

Written off when lost height in turn after night take-off on training flight and flew into ground near Balerno, a suburb of Edinburgh, Lothian, Scotland, situated 12 kilometres south west of the city centre; pilot Sergeant John Martin Cullen Bryden, RAFVR (802600) was killed

Sergeant Bryden took off at 10.10pm on his first night flight in a Spitfire. He was seen taking off into the darkness, banking at about 500 feet and then the Spitfire dived at full throttle into the ground, creating a fireball visible for miles around.
