The Douglas C-47B was part of a formation that was about to drop paratroopers north of Eindhoven, the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden.
The aircraft was hit by flak, which knocked out the left engine and set the fuel tanks on fire. All paratroopers bailed out near the dropzone. The aircraft descended until it hit the ground, bursting into flames. One of the crew members was thrown clear of the aircraft through the open cargo door.
