Narrative:
After departure from Mitchel Field on a local training flight, the motor caught fire and pilot was ordered to point towards the sea and bail out. The aircraft crashed along the shoreline, 2 miles east of Jones Beach, NY.
Pilot, 2nd Lt. Richard N. Nellis, of Watertown, New York, died of exposure after descending into the ocean. His body was recovered about an hour after the incident.
