El día viernes 31 de octubre del año 1952 un avión Fiat G.55 Centauro registro C-09, perteneciente a la Fuerza Aérea Argentina con asiento en la IV Brigada Aérea El Plumerillo de la provincia de Mendoza, cuyo piloto era el Alférez Jorge Arturo Van Thienen cuando estaba sobrevolando la zona de Cruz de Piedra departamento de Maipú provincia de Mendoza sufre un plante de motor y se incendia, el piloto no logra maniobrar el avión y decide saltar en paracaídas. El avión se estrella contra el terreno y su piloto llega a salvo a tierra.
