Narrative:
On 28 October 1944, during World War II, a Wellington bomber from RAF Chipping Warden in Oxfordshire crashed at Prince Hill on a training exercise. Vickers Wellington B. Mk. X HF465, piloted by 1544917 Flight Sergeant Leonard Joseph Timperley R.A.F.V.R. was on a daytime cross country flight when the tragic incident took place. While Timperley was making a descent through a cloud formation, he lost control of the aircraft.

As a result of this loss of control, the 'Wimpy' experienced a catastrophic structural failure. This resulted in the aircraft disintegrating in the air. The bulk of the aircraft debris fell in the vicinity of Bridgemere, Cheshire. A memorial to the six airmen who died in the crash was dedicated in 2003.
