Narrative:
The helicopter of the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAV), call sign EKAV2, undertook a mission to airlift a patient from the island of Patmos to Athens. According to the submitted flight plan, the route to be followed was Athens–Patmos–Athens. After the helicopter landed on Patmos, a telephone communication between the helicopter crew and the assistant at Helitalia's Operations Office resulted in an agreement for the helicopter to land in Syros due to deteriorating weather conditions in Athens.

After taking off from Patmos and receiving the latest weather update for Athens from Mykonos Airport, the helicopter’s Captain decided to proceed toward Athens, despite particularly adverse weather conditions within a 20-nautical-mile radius of Elliniko Airport. At a distance of 7 nautical miles south of Sounio, and while the Captain had been instructed by the Approach Controller at Elliniko Airport to head toward Aegina, the helicopter disappeared from the Approach Radar screen without any communication.
