Narrative:
The American registered Smith 600 Aerostar took off from Wonderboom Airport near Pretoria at 16:30 on a one hour flight to Harrismith in the Free State. On board were the owner and pilot, well known and much respected Dirk de Vos, Gerhard Bekker, an architect from Harrismith, Edwin Mahabeer, an engineer from Durban and two of South Africa's top cyclists, Jaco Odendaal and Jaco de Witt, both aged 22.

It is alleged that the aircraft may have entered a storm cell near Cornelia in the northern Free State, as there was severe thunderstorm activity in the area at the time. The last communication with the aircraft was from a passenger via a cell phone call to a family member in Harrismith to say they would be landing in twenty minutes. The aircraft never arrived.

The aircraft was found the following day at 11:45 in a grass covered field on the farm Ergenis, 7km south of Cornelia not far from the N2 national road. The aircraft was completely destroyed and wreckage was strewn over a distance of more than 1 km.

The case remains under investigation of the SACAA.
