El día domingo 16 de enero de 1944 el avión Junkers Ju-86Z registro 901 perteneciente a la Fuerza Aérea Chilena FAC cuya tripulación estaba compuesta por el piloto Capitán Rudy Geiger como copiloto Fernando Savaria, ocho médicos, llevando además una tonelada de medicamentos para dar ayuda a las victimas del terremoto de San Juan, en el momento que estaba aterrizando en la pista de la Base militar El Plumerillo de la provincia de Mendoza rompió el tren de aterrizaje y el avión capoto, toda la tripulación resulto ilesos
