The first Model 18 was certainly the prototype NX15810, The Model 18A (NX15810 c/no 62) was completed in early January 1937 with two engines Wright R-760-E2, groups 7 cylinder radial of 320 hp. To ensure the best possible conditions for the first flight, Walter H.Beech had hired one of the best drivers Transcontinental & Western Air, James N.Payton that would assist HC "Ding" Rankin, test pilot of the manufacturer. On the 15 January 1937, in the early afternoon, Payton and Rankin made first flight in the aircraft, along with R.E.Williams representing the engine, and some friends of Walter.H.Beech. After takeoff without problem, the prototype effected some manouvres before returning to the parking facility and its staff assembled
Another pilot of TWA , Jack Thornburg, made ??the first series of tests, 23 hours and 20 minutes of flight, which ended with the award of a certificate of airworthiness ATC-630. A second tranche of tests (13 hours 20 minutes) ended March 10, 1937, Jack Thornburg not suggesting in its final report that some modifications of detail immobilizing the plane just a few days before delivery Ethyl Corporation, having purchased the prototype Model 17, offered one of the Model 18 at $37,500 U$D.

The aircraft was delivered on 25 June 1937 and Harry K.Coffey used it regularly for three years before selling it in 1940 the Canadian Government which was a large fleet for the training of pilots and specialists needed by the war in Europe.

This aircraft was to return to the US civil register after World War II, regain its original registration and continue to fly in Alaska. This aircraft was to return to the register after the American Civil War World, renewed its original registration, and continues to fly in Alaska. Finally cancelled on September 10, 2008, it is since kept at a Californian airport waiting for restoration.
