Forced landed with engine failure Homefield Farm, near Crowhurst, East Sussex 14.9.2007 en route from Andrewsfield to Redhill and damaged when struck hay bales. According to a contemporary local newspaper report ("Halstead Gazette" 20 September 2007):

"Tiger Moth nose dives - co-pilot hurt
By Anna Brett

A co-pilot of a 1930s bi-plane has a suspected broken leg after crashing into hay bales in an emergency landing. The de Havilland Tiger Moth had left Andrewsfield Airfield, near Stebbing, and was badly damaged in the crash.

The vintage craft was bound for Redhill Aerodrome in Surrey but ran into difficulties, touching down at around 6pm in a field near Crowhurst, close to Lingfield in Surrey on Friday September 14. A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "It was forced to land and hit some hay bales in the field, causing major damage to its body. The pilot was uninjured, however a passenger (a male co-pilot) was taken to East Surrey Hospital with a suspected broken leg."

The Civil Aviation Authority were informed. Matthew Byatt, director of Delta Aviation, owns the plane. He said the co-pilot broke his leg on leaving the plane, but the wood and canvas aircraft "will be flying again".

According to the AAIB report into the incident:

"While in the cruise, at approximately 1,000 ft agl, G-ANDE's engine failed. At the time the passenger, in the front seat, was flying. The commander took control and flew a forced landing into a grass farm strip that had hay bales scattered across it with the exception of the two marked out runways.

Due to insufficient height the commander landed across the grass runways. Just before the aircraft landed the passenger unstrapped, stood up and jumped out of the right side of the aircraft. After landing the commander ground looped the aircraft in a bid to stop the aircraft before the field boundary and a large tree. The aircraft then hit a bale and came to a halt.

The commander made the aircraft's ignition switches safe before vacating it and going to offer assistance to the passenger who had a broken leg. The aircraft suffered severe damage to its wings, fuselage and undercarriage. Despite a detailed examination nothing was found that might have caused the failure".

Re-registered (C of R G-ANDE/R16) on 12.11.2008 to Duncan Alexander Nisbet, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire (under repair at Sywell, Northamptonshire in May 2015). Re-registered (C of R G-ANDE/R17) on 20.5.14 to Keith Michael Perkins, Maidstone, Kent (probably stored at Pent Farm, Postling, Kent pending rebuild). Re-registered (C of R G-ANDE/R18) on 28.5.21 to Aero Legends Leasing Ltd (Keith Perkins), Maidstone, Kent. Currently registered, although believed still under repair at Pent Farm, Postling, Kent; to be painted in 1943-period markingsd as EM726/‘FY’.
