During the flight, the rear latch on the Mooney aircraft failed and the hatch door flew off, catching onto the elevator, twisting the horizontal stabiliser and causing minor warping to the wings. The pilot managed to execute a fast, but safe landing on a nearby airstrip. Neither occupant was injured.
