The aircraft experienced a mid-air collision while engaged in fire-fighting operations on the Bishop Fire in SE Nevada, 14 mi SSW of Caliente. Both aircraft were destroyed. Both pilots were killed. The fire was on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The two privately owned aircraft were under contract to the agency.

According to FlightRadar24, it appears that both planes were flying in the same direction in close proximity, with N1558W flying at the rear roughly one kilometre away. At 12:49pm, both planes descended from 7300ft to 6600ft. N1558W's data disappeared from FR24 at 12:50:57pm. N8510M's data continued for another minute until 12:51:55pm, with no noticeable change in altitude or speed at the end.
