Narrative:During the execution of a landing on runway 02 at Santiago Vila Airport (SKGI), the Cessna 402B aircraft touched down on the runway with several bounces, followed by the retraction of the main landing gear, which caused the aircraft to slide and the fuselage to scrape along the runway.
As a result, the aircraft veered off the right side of the runway. It came to rest 920 meters from threshold 02, within the safety area. The aircraft sustained significant damage, and the crew evacuated on their own without injury. The airport’s Fire and Rescue Service responded to the site, though extinguishing agents were not needed.
After reviewing the factual conditions of the event, the investigation determined the following probable causes for the serious incident:
- Lateral runway excursion due to loss of directional control of the aircraft following the retraction of the landing gear.
- Retraction and immediate extension of the landing gear mechanism during the crew's unsuccessful attempt to execute a go-around maneuver. Upon retracting and extending the mechanism, the aircraft was not in the proper configuration for takeoff, and the aircraft's weight forced the retraction of the gear, causing the fuselage to scrape along the runway surface.
The following contributing factors to the serious incident were identified:
- Execution of an unstable, high, and fast approach, which led to a hard landing and multiple bounces on the runway.
- Overconfidence during approach and landing, assuming favorable and suitable conditions for the maneuver when they were not.
