Narrative:
During cruise flight with three doors removed, the aircraft, a Hughes 369D helicopter, N1089N, registered to South Coast Helicopter, Inc., and operated by Western Helicopters, experienced a loss of the tail rotor assembly due to an accidental discharge of personal cargo and performed an emergency hard landing in mountainous terrain near Highland, California.
The helicopter was destroyed during the accident sequence. The pilot and two passengers received minor injuries while the third passenger was seriously injured.
