The aircraft was probably hit by a 20mm shell which exploded in the cockpit. The pilot, 1st Lt. M.F. Bench, did not survive and is buried at the Ardennes War Cemetery in Belgium.

The Lightning was flying fighter escort for the USAAF operation against marshalling yards at Brussels-Schaarbeek, Belgium.
