Narrative:On the night of 2 June 1942, the crew of Lancaster R5564 "OL-P" participated in a 1000 bomber raid against the German city of Essen. They took off in Lancaster R5564 from their base at Scampton at 23:10 on 1 June 1942. Nothing was heard from them after take off and it is presumed they crashed into the North Sea, west of Katwijk, Netherlands. Probably, the aircraft was shot down by night fighter pilot Hauptmann Erich Simon of the Ergänzungsstaffel/NJG 2, who was flying a Ju 88 C-6 from Gilze-Rijen airfield.
Plt Off Billing's body washed ashore on the Dutch coast and was buried on 1 August 1942 in the New Eastern Cemetery at Amsterdam. His six comrades are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial:
