Narrative:
The 421 Squadron pilot was holding for entry to the Siegenburg bombing range when he noted a derelict tank as a target of opportunity. He decided to make a simulated attack, but he was in a low energy state and he broke off the attack. Unfortunately, he could not avoid trees on rising terrain during the pullout. The pilot managed to recover the aircraft and zoomed to 1600 ft AGL, but he was experiencing compressor stalls. He turned toward Ingolstadt Manching Air Base (IGS/ETSI), but at low speed and a slight descent the pilot, Lt. K.G. Cranfield, safely ejected at very low altitude.

This was the first of two successful ejections from CF-104s by this pilot. See: 104892 4-June-1982.
