Narrative:
The 416 AW(F) Squadron CF-101B 101049 was the wingman in a two plane section, of four squadron aircraft enroute from home base CFB Chatham, New Brunswick to a detachment at CFS Gander, Newfoundland. The two aircraft were cleared to descend from FL 310 to FL 200. Lead initiated the descent by rolling inverted and letting the nose fall below the horizon. Number two also rolled his aircraft, but after 270 degrees he heard his RLS horn and his aircraft yawed to the right and the nose pitched down. The aircraft had entered a low-energy pitch-up. The pilot was unable to recover from the gyrations and both crewmembers safely ejected at 7000 feet near Bay d’Espoir on the south coast of Newfoundland. Pilot Lt. D. R. Baceda and navigator Lt. Michaud were both picked up safe and sound by CH-113 Labrador helicopter and brought to CFS Gander.
