Narrative:Crashed at South Cowshaw Farm, not far from Lochmaben, Tinwald, near ear Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, five miles north-east of Dumfries, on open hillside between the town and Lockerbie after the pilot ejected following a bird strike.
Jaguar XZ111/GO of 6 Squadron, RAF, was one of two aircraft that took of from RAF Coltishall in East Anglia, England for a low-level training mission. The aircraft that crashed was being flown by Flt Lt Clarke, RNZAF—an exchange pilot who was familiar with the Jaguar aircraft.
Toward the end of the low-level training sortie, and while overflying the Scottish lowlands, a number of seagulls were ingested by the jet engines, causing a flame-out. The pilot shut down both engines, but was unable to relight either of them due to the damage caused by the bird strike. Unable to maintain control, the pilot ejected from the aircraft but sustained major injuries in the process.
