On July 21, 1947 Ivor Reid took off in Spitfire LA211 when his normal plane was borrowed by another member of the squadron to fly to a wedding, as it had just been serviced. He flew LA211 out over the sea on an air-to-air firing exercise.
The Spitfire crashed in the sea in an attempted ditching, following failure of the engine. A forearm washed up on the coast a few weeks later was identified by the signet ring.
