Narrative:
MID AIR COLLISION 05/02/1986 WITH BELL 47 G-AXKO: TAIL ROTOR & PART OF TAILCONE CUT OFF

THE PILOT OF G-AXKO WAS ON A NAVIGATION EXERCISE FROM REDHILL AND TRACKING DUE EAST. G-HSKY WAS ON A FLIGHT FROM TICEHURST, 9NM SE OF TONBRIDGE,KENT,TO WYCOMBE WITH ONE PASSENGER AND TRACKING NORTH WEST.BOTH AIRCRAFT WERE AT 1500 FT QNH.

AS THE CONVERGING TRACKS AND CONFLICT BECAME APPARENT TO BOTH PILOTS THEY TOOK AVOIDING ACTION,G-AXKO TURNING LEFT AND G-HSKY TURNING RIGHT. AT THIS POINT THE MAIN ROTOR BLADES TOUCHED AND BOTH AIRCRAFT WERE FORCED INTO AN AUTOROTATIVE LANDING.G-HSKY SUSTAINED FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE TAIL ROTOR ON LANDING IN A HOP FIELD.

CAA CLOSURE: A LARS RADAR SERVICE COVERING THE AREA OF THE ACCIDENT HAS NOW COMMENCED,ALTHOUGH THIS IS CO- INCIDENTAL & NOT AS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT.THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR MAINTAINING SAFE SEPARATION WHEN OPERATING VFR IN OPEN AIRSPACE REMAINS WITH THE PILOT.
