Narrative:On July 22nd PO Smithson and his air gunner Sgt. I N Robinson were conducting an air test on Defiant T4071 from Squires Gate when the aircraft struck high ground at Eddisbury Hill, Delamere, Cheshire en-route to Cranage. The aircraft was burnt out and the crew perished. The airframe had only 60 recorded hours.
