El día miércoles 6 de octubre del año 1943 a las 09:15hs el avión Beechcraft UC-45A Registro 41-1877 perteneciente a la Fuerza Aérea Norteamericana USAF, cuya tripulación estaba compuesta por Piloto Mayor Campbell H. Gould acompañado del oficial Principal Walter Chomak, suscriptos a la Embajada Norteamérica de Argentina. Habían decolado de la Base Aérea de El Palomar perteneciente a la aviación militar del ejército argentino, con rumbo a Montevideo, Uruguay, en pleno ascenso y a muy baja altura realizaron un viraje a muy baja altura posiblemente para evitar una capa de nueves bajas, el avión choco con el ala izquierda contra el suelo a pleno motor a unos 500 metros al Este de la Base y sobre la calle paralela a las vías del Ferrocarril Pacifico. Ambos tripulantes fallecieron por el impacto en el accidente.
