The helicopter crashed and the pilot (aged 30) sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the hospital. Emergency rescue teams were able to locate the wreckage quickly because a personal locator beacon had been carried in the helicopter.
Early reports indicated the pilot suffered a broken hip and is undergoing surgery. Police said he also suffered cuts to his face and back. The pilot was airlifted to the Mount Isa Hospital by RACQ LifeFlight and later transported to Brisbane, where he remains in a stable condition.
"We believe he was flying fairly low to the ground, maybe involved in mustering or something similar," Duty Superintendent Lee Morgan said.
Alpurrurulam (at approximate co ordinates 20°58′S, 137°55′E), also known as Lake Nash, is a small town in the Northern Territory, Australia, 600 km east of Tennant Creek and 17 km from the NT–Queensland border.
