The helicopter from ALAT's 3RHC (3rd Combat Helicopter Regiment) crashed while engaged in a reconnaissance flight in cooperation with Ivorian forces. One report suggested that the aircraft had hit a power line.

Both crew members suffered serious injuries and were taken to the medical centre at the French military base at Port Bouet. Some hours after being taken to this facility the pilot died from his injuries while the remaining crew member was flown to France for further treatment.
