An Indian airforce Jaguar fighter jet crashed Thursday in the northern Indian state of Punjab, but the pilot bailed out safely, an air force spokesman said. The plane was on a "routine sortie" when it crashed in the Ambala sector of Punjab, he said.

"The Jaguar fighter jet was flying in a two-aircraft formation when the pilot reported loss of control. He ejected safely," said the spokesman. India's air force, the world's fourth largest, has suffered a string of crashes, but mostly of ageing MiG fighters.
